They are easily recognized by the distinctive shield shape of their backs. They are brown plus grey in color. Their legs are articulated at the knee which elevates their bodies off the ground. They are virtually impervious to all insecticides and are of immense concern to the USDA because of their ability to decimate agricultural fields. There are no known natural predators in the United States. Currently, research is looking at the Samurai wasp as a possible biological control.
